On the last Saturday of every month, we come together at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Catholic Cemetery to take part in a Month’s Mind Mass. Some of those attending are Catholic, some are not. Some have lost a loved one in the last thirty days and for others, it has been many months or even years. But when we join together in the Chapel of the Resurrection, we do so with a common purpose in a spirit of love to pray for and remember our departed loved ones.
All who attend the Month’s Mind Mass provide the name of their departed loved one upon entering. After the Homily, the deceased’s name is read aloud and the relative or friend present comes forward and lights a candle in their honor. The names of those who have been buried at Calvary Catholic Cemetery thirty days prior to the Mass are included in the Prayer of the Faithful during the Mass. All are welcome to take part in this Mass no matter where your loved one is interred.
When writing this piece, I came across an excellent article in Aletia, “Month’s Mind Mass”: Honoring the departed a month later by Larry Peterson. It is an excellent explanation and article about one person’s discovery of this Mass.
